Gallery redesign POLL!

The staff have been debating a gallery redesign for some time now and we've decided the best idea would be to put it to a public opinion poll. This is your chance to vote on the future of your gallery!


The gallery currently uses PhotoPost software. This is designed to use categories, ie. photos will either be loli, shota or toddler. Photos can be tagged, however since they are still within a category tagging is not vital. The new gallery would be based on Gelbooru, ie. no categories, photos are organised purely by tags. A photo can be tagged as "loli", thus putting it in the loli "category". However unlike with PhotoPost the same photo can also be tagged as "shota", effectively putting it in two categories at once. This would also solve problems like where to put 3D neko, as it can now be in both categories at once!

Another advantage is that categories are not exclusive. With the current setup, you can either search for plain lolicon or neko lolicon, but you cannot do both as they are in separate categories. With Gelbooru, you can search for "loli" and it will return every loli photo, regardless of other tags. Of course, you can add more tags to narrow down your search (eg. you can search for "neko loli" if you only want nekos).

The third main advantage with the Gelbooru software is that it should be possible to expand it to support boolean queries (AND OR NOT), allowing very specific searches.

However the main disadvantage with the Gelbooru system is that untagged photos are useless. With our current setup, even an untagged photo is still within a category, so has some way of finding it. But with Gelbooru, an untagged picture can only be found by browsing the entire gallery. We can convert the existing categories into tags to prevent old pictures from being lost, but unless people start tagging photos as they upload them you may have to wait a while before new photos are accessible (ie. someone tags them). Note that this is not a guaranteed problem, how much of an issue it becomes depends on how much effort you are willing to put into the gallery.


To summarise:
Pros:

• Photos can be in multiple "categories" at once, allowing you to search ALL lolis, including 3D and neko. This is not possible with the category method.
• The system can be expanded to use boolean searching (AND, OR, NOT)

Cons:

• Tagging is extremely important with this method, untagged photos are almost unviewable.

First off, it would have been nice if someone gave me the heads up, seeing as I am staff and do work in the gallery. Second off, as far as the integration, how fast can it be set up? Also, how would staff positions work for the current gallery staff? I know this idea has been floating around, but it would also be nice to be clued into this stuff, seeing as it does involve me, as well as a few other people on this site. Also, is the gelbooru gallery stable? Can it be integrated with the forums? Can it count pics posted to people's post counts? Can we export the current tags to the new software? What kind of effort are we going to need to put into this to arrange it? Can comments be exported to the new software? What about the ratings? Would we be including all the random and hentai pics? Need more details.

The answer to all the technical questions is "Yes, if we can be bothered." Standard Gelbooru software has absolutely zero integration with vBulletin, but there's no reason we can't modify it. It's just a matter of what we actually want to transfer and what we don't. I don't know how long it will take to make the modifications, but we're definitely talking months rather than weeks. However the old gallery will still be fully active while the new gallery is in development, so there's no need to worry about time.

As for the hentai/random pics, I see no reason not to include them. Last time we had a poll the majority of the forum was in favour of keeping the hentai gallery, so I guess if we go off that we'd include them. Nothing is decided for certain at this stage, and if you don't think we should include them that's fine.

definatly say to leave it how it is, theres no sense in changing something thats already good, while its great the way gelboru works, theres nooo way we have enough tags to do that, they have maybe 15-25 tags each pic, we have like 7, mme, i think its easier the way it is, you could make an option for searches to be made like gelboru, but no sense in making it the defualt

We asked rock about modifying the current gallery to do gelbooru-style searching, but he said that PhotoPost is too category-oriented for it to work properly.

Isn't there a "Safe" "Questionable" "Not Safe" option on Gelbooru? It would be smart to integrate that into the gallery.

Or, maybe 2 galleries; one for Safe and one for Unsafe.

The only problem I have with the current gallery is the limit of frame size.
It is set at 2500 X 2500 if I remember correctly and that is a major problem.
There is no size of the file limit but the frame limit disqualify many of my pictures.
I think I started a thread about it but it didn't go anywhere......XD
Question, does the other gallery have the same problem or not?
I also don't see any reason why the whole idea should make the life of the contributor harder in order to please those who are mainly here to grab and go.

It doesn't have to be the uploader that tags the pics, it's possible to just leave them untagged and let the gurus tag them later.

The photo size limit has nothing to do with the gallery software, although I agree that it doesn't make sense to limit the size like that.

well, after thinking about it, i say to leave it as is, but maybe with some of the catagory changes that were previously mentioned by multiple members. one reason is that, having it the way that it is, we can see just the new pictures if we want to where if we changed it to gelbooru we would have to go in and search all the tags seperate if we wanted to do that...also, with how many people appear to still not tag the photos, it would make it more of a challenge to organize those and we would probably still have a lot of wasted space

1) can you enforce tagging? ie any new photo that is not tagged either cannot be uploaded or B gets deleted after X days (if you cannot be bother to tag then we can't be bothered t keep your photo)

2) How easy is it to tag photo's after they have been posted, if I have to do them one at a time then the software is useless. If I can go through and select 30 and apply tags to all of them at once then tagging works.

3) How easy is it to upload multiple photos? and then how easy is it to apply tags to them?

4) Can the tags be standardized with a list of tags that we can select from?

I have a list of tags for people to use in the support section, as well as they are linked to searches for the tags for people that don't know what tags they want to search for. I have been trying to get uploaders to tag their pics, but some refuse to, not gonna mention names, though.

Okay, first off, it also makes it harder for contributers to find what they want when pics are not tagged properly. As well as it makes it harder for staff and members alike to find double posts, or pics they shouldn't post because it is already posted. Next, with the size, just resize it in photoshop, paint, gimp, any photo editing software. Pics too large to fit on a computer screen are a pain in the ass. If you want, upload them to the site's download section in a zip file to they can download them if you want. And it is not to make the contributor's life harder, but their lives easier, as well as the staff so they don't upload double posts. I think you completely overlook the point of tagging. Also, don't you realize most "contributors" are just leaching from other sites? Very few original artists uploading their work to the site.

What I would like is to be able to choose X photo's and then to assign a few tags to them. This is actually the exact system I had in mind. Assigning the basic tags would be mandatory, as it's equivalent to choosing a category to upload to. Any more tags than that would be optional, as they're not strictly necessary for browsing.

I hadn't actually considered multiple photo uploads, if anyone's uploaded to Gelbooru before they could tell you whether or not it currently supports bulk uploading and tagging, but if it's really that important to you we could write a bulk uploading feature.

You can browse recently uploaded pictures (ignoring tags) in Gelbooru too, they have a button for doing just that.

i think a redesign would be damn good to be honest
i would like to be able to browse individuals still. like i would like to be able to browse EMT's pics for example. then find a pic i like and then search using thos tags (like a 'more like this')
i'm not a fan of the way it's broken down like a forum.

Oh yes, we can make uploader a tag, so you can still browse everything uploaded by a particular user.

Lol, daunting, huh? xD

I knew what you meant, however I felt a need to point out what we already have. I don't think it will be radio buttons, but I always like the little pop-up menu of all the tags that match what you are typing giving you a list. As to how theirs works, never really seen it. I downloaded one of their versions they offer for a download, I will give it a test run some time and check out what it is like.

As for the size of that list, now consider how long it took me to make that. Yeah, now you know I have no life, lol.

Also keep in mind it will take some time to set up how we need, and I don't think it will be started working on until it seems like people want it. I talked to Some_Guy about it, not sure if he started it or not, I did not ask him. Enough out of me for now.
